Due to the Football World Cup boost
(Mexico).- Due to the boom of betting houses because of the Football World Cup that is
being held in Germany, owners of professional football teams linked to Televisa have
started Internet sports betting operations, after the authorization of Carlos Abascal,
head of the Department of the Interior (SG). It was reported by Daniel Olivares
Villagómez, member of the social organization Di No a los Casinos (Say No to Casinos).
Villagómez explained that, through the authorization, approved on December 22 by the
General Direction of Games and Draws of SG, the multinational firm BWIN was allowed to
operate Internet bets in Mexico.
The international firm is associated to Promojuegos of Mexico (which also was granted a
permission to operate casinos a few days before Santiago Creel left SG), whose majority
shareholder, Raúl Quintana Fernández, “is connected to Emilio Azcárraga Jean in
Televisa, because it has been the representative of Pegaso Group, headed by Alejandro
Burillo Azcárraga, cousin of Azcárraga Jean, president of the National Team Commission
of the Mexican Football Federation (Femexfut) and organizer of different stadiums and
teams in the different states”.

Another shareholder of Promojuegos, said Olivares, is Pablo Cortina, “whose father got
married for the second time with Joaquina Saldívar González de León, which is relative
of Santiago Creel”.
Olivares assured that there is a “conflict of interests” in the association, because,
besides operating bets through BWIN Mexico, “Burillo Azcárraga men are owners of
professional football clubs and they are connected to Femexfut, a players’ organization
that supports the candidate to the presidency of the PAN political party, Felipe
Calderón, as a way to thank the licenses granted by PAN civil servants”, assured
Olivares. |
