Italian Government Bans Over 600 Online Gambling Sites - 02-26-06

February 26 - Over 600 online gambling sites will be blocked, after the Italian government ruled that the acquisition of password and credit information by these sites are illegal in terms of Italian law, in what the government terms "fraudulent acquisition"...

The government will force ISP's in Italy to block these sites, a total of 684, including all online gambling sites licensed in Malta.

The announcement comes as part of the 2006 Budget in Italy, and it is deemed that all these websites are illegally targeting Italian citizens. Gambling sites may only operate if they are licensed in Italy. Any Italian Internet Service Providers who are found to be in breach of the new law will receive large fines.

Some of the banned sites are huge global online gambling operators such as Betfair, who will no longer be able to provide its services to Italian citizens. Betfair holds a Maltese license. A backlash from these companies is expected in the form of a legal challenge to the new laws.

Wow, there goes a lot of buisness for people. That is amazing that they did this, there had to be a lot of reasoning behind this though.

That is just insane. I would hate to be one of the companies that was closed...
