Kenosha casino plan advances
Associated Press

Federal officials have given preliminary approval for a new American Indian casino in Kenosha.

Menominee tribal officials said Terrance Virden, regional director in the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs Midwest Regional Office, sent them a letter on Friday saying the office has determined the casino would benefit the tribe and not hurt the community.

Both the BIA in Washington and Gov. Jim Doyle must approve the project.

The next step likely will be release of a federal environmental impact study, tribal officials said. There is no timeline for a final decision, the tribe said.

The Menominee announced plans in January 2004 to build an $808 million, off-reservation entertainment center and casino at Kenosha's Dairyland Greyhound Park.

The Forest County Potawatomi tribe, which runs a casino in Milwaukee, began a campaign against the project about a month before Kenosha County voters approved the proposal in a November 2004 advisory referendum.

Wisconsin's 11 federally recognized tribes run a total of 23 casinos in the state.
