Playing the lottery isn’t just a pastime for La Grange resident Ruth Maye; it’s an everyday routine.
On Saturday, the cost of playing paid off when she struck it big, winning the top prize of one of the newest scratch-off tickets available through the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Maye spent $60 Saturday afternoon the $1 game, Nines in a Line at Hasty Mart in La Grange. She was scratching off the seventh ticket when she won $9,999.
“I looked at it three or four times and then I hollered,” said Maye.
Maye said she has been playing scratch-off tickets ever since the birth of the state’s lottery in March, but gambling is nothing new to her.
“I go to Atlantic City and play,” said Maye, whose husband Norman owns the La Grange Bus Company. She said the amount she won Saturday was “not a lot” to her and she plans to spend her winnings paying bills and shopping. She said her total lottery winnings are around $20,000.
Maye said she buys tickets daily and usually spends about $100. She also won more than $700 about two months ago playing the scratch-off game Ruby Red 7s. That ticket was also bought at Hasty Mart. She said both she and her husband regularly play the lottery.
“But I buy more tickets than him,” she said.
For store owner Sam Youssef, Maye’s winnings are significant.
“She broke her own record,” said Youssef, who sold the winning ticket. Maye already held the record for the most amount of money won in his store.
