Laid-off worker wins $280,637 at Oklahoma casino

SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) - A woman laid off from her job at an Oklahoma City tire plant has won $280,637 at an Oklahoma casino.

Tuwanna Green lost her job at the Dayton Tire Plant when the company announced in October it was closing the plant. Green, a Dayton worker for seven years, decided to find a part-time job and go back to school although the cost of continuing her education posed a significant financial burden.

During a trip to the Firelake Grand Casino with her aunt and uncle on Jan. 18, Green won a $280,637 jackpot after investing just $40 in a progressive gaming network game.

"This is really a story about how things can change for the better when you least expect it," said Brad Peltier, marketing director for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and Firelake Enterprises.

"We are very excited for Ms. Green and can't imagine a more deserving person to have won the jackpot," Peltier said.

Green's jackpot is the second to be awarded at Firelake in the past three weeks. On Dec. 26, a Bristow woman won a $334,449 jackpot while playing a progressive gaming network game.

The casino along with 150 other tribal casinos across the nation carries a variety of progressive gaming systems. Each time a coin is played in a linked machine anywhere in the network the cumulative jackpot continues to grow until some lucky winner hits the top award.

Firelake opened in October and features more than 125,000 square feet of gaming space, more than 1,800 of the newest Class 3, Vegas-style compacted gaming machines and a variety of table games including Blackjack, Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em, Three Card Poker, Craps and Spinnette.
