Largest Pa. casino won't open until July 2008 at earliest

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Las Vegas Sands plans the state's largest casino at the site of Bethlehem Steel's massive shuttered mill along the Lehigh River, but half a dozen slot-machine sites outside the Lehigh Valley will be up and running before its earliest possible opening date in July 2008.
Sands officials say they've decided against building a temporary casino that could begin operating sooner, even though some operators say an earlier start will mean a long-term advantage.
Mount Airy Resort & Casino in Monroe County expects to be the first stand-alone casino operating, with 2,500 of its 3,000 slot machines on line before the end of this year. "Being first will enable us to attract people from outside the region," spokesman Kevin Feeley said.
Sands officials say they must start construction by May for a mid-2008 opening, but have no intention of rushing. "We're not going to throw up four walls just to get people gambling sooner," spokesman Ron Reese said. "We're building a destination that people are going to be willing to travel from other regions to see. Even if they're playing somewhere else first, when we open, they'll come." |
