Las Vegas casino roller coaster leaves riders stalled
April 05, 2007

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A casino roller coaster blew a circuit and stalled Thursday, leaving 16 people stranded 15 feet above the ground for about an hour, fire officials said.

"Speed, The Ride," a roller coaster at the Sahara hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip malfunctioned at about 3:30 p.m., just as the coaster's cars were approaching a loop, Clark County Fire Department spokesman Scott Allison said.

Allison said the cars rode part of the way up the loop and then rolled backward, coming to a stop upright and leaning to the left. The riders' safety harnesses were in place, he said.

"They all looked pretty comfortable. They're all being good sports about it," Allison said.

The riders were helped off onto a truck ladder, and no one was injured, he said.

Sahara marketing director Ron Garrett said the roller coaster is about eight years old and has not had similar problems in at least the past four years. He said the ride was programmed to stop when breakers go out.

"It did exactly what it was supposed to do," he said.

Garrett said he would offer the 16 riders some compensation.

"Let me see what they want," he said.
