LAVERGNE, TAYLOR AND MORRIS WIN QUARTER HORSE TITLES AT DELTA DOWNS

- 52-DAY SEASON ENDS ON HIGH NOTE FOR TOP HORSEMEN -

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel capped off its 2006 American Quarter Horse Meeting on Sunday with Louisiana Showcase Night. The evening of excitement featured the season’s richest race and it closed out a tremendous meeting for several top horsemen.

Danny Lavergne used the closing night program to showcase his talent as he put the finishing touches on his first leading jockey title at Delta Downs. The Louisiana native booted home three winners Sunday night to bring his season total up to 71, far outpacing Tami Purcell, who finished second with 52 wins.

Rounding out the top ten jockeys for 2006 were Gilbert Ortiz (51 wins), Alfonso Lujan (42), Orlando Baldillez (35), Steve Fuller (33), Nickey Laws (30), Martin Rubalcava (28), Alvin Brossette (25), and Ronald Lejeune (18).

Lavergne also owned the distinction of being the top rider in mount earnings with a season total of $912,495. Purcell finished second in that category as well with $762,310, while Alfonso Lujan rounded out the top three with a sum of $739,414.

Texas resident M. Heath Taylor won another leading trainer title at Delta Downs in 2006. The venerable horsemen closed out his season 59 wins, including a score in Sunday’s restricted Grade I $392,400 Lee Berwick Futurity with Dynomax. The victory sent the Taylor barn over the seven-digit mark in earnings for the second season in a row. After the dust had settled, Taylor’s earnings total was an astounding $1,188,790.

Following Taylor in the final trainer standings were Kenneth L. Roberts, Sr. (57), Ray Robbins (30), Janet Van Bebber (26), Danny Joe Eldridge (24), Chad Hassenpflug (22), Kelli Smith (19), Rodney Reed (19), Anthony Arey (14), and Joseph Manucy (14).

M. C. Morris of Mississippi watched 18 of his runners win this season at Delta Downs. That total earned him the title of leading owner for 2006. Morris also led all owners in terms of money won with $260,968. A total of $30,000 came on closing night when War Chants won the $50,000 Live Oak Stakes.

The remainder owners at the top of the list this season were Geral Dewitt (10), Teddy Abrams, Jr. (9), Janet Van Bebber (9), Oscar Rohne (6), David Lee Vance (6), Ricky D. Miller (6), J. W. Owens (5), Riverine Farms (5), and James K. and Teresa K. Vance (4).

Delta Downs’ 52-day Quarter Horse Meeting handled a total of $22,706,267. Fans in Vinton, La. were responsible for $2,650,999 of that total, while race fans at other racetracks and OTB’s across the country accounted for $20,055,268.

The overall average daily handle for the season was $436,658.98 wagered on Delta Downs races. Local fans bet $50,980.75 of that total with $385,678.23 coming from off-track locations.
