Libs pledge to cut poker machine numbers

July 24, 2006 - 6:19AM

Poker machine numbers would be cut by 5500 under a Victorian Liberal government.

Opposition leader Ted Baillieu pledged on Sunday to reduce the number of poker machines from 27,500 to 22,000 when contracts with Tattersalls and Tabcorp expire.

Mr Baillieu has also promised to double the funding for support services for problem gamblers, the Herald Sun reports.

Machines will be stripped from venues in problem areas, including Dandenong, Maribrynong, Geelong, Warrnambool, and Shepparton.

"A Liberal government will be dedicated to removing these machines and tackling the extent of gambling addiction," Mr Baillieu said.

"It's time for a serious effort to protect and help those who need it most."
