Limo drivers are latest to lose Tropicana jobs

ATLANTIC CITY — The payroll has been shrinking at Tropicana Casino and Resort since Columbia Sussex Corp. took over the Boardwalk casino, along with other casinos in Nevada and Indiana, in January.

Among the latest casualties: the casino's on-staff limousine drivers.

A company spokeswoman told The Press of Atlantic City for Thursday's newspapers that the department had been abolished but would not say exactly how many jobs had been cut with that move or in other layoffs this year.

One driver said about 40 workers in the limo department had been laid off.

The Casino Control Commission says the number of employees at the Tropicana dropped from 4,507 to 3,846 — or about 15 percent — between Jan. 2 and April 2. That does not include the limo driver layoffs.

Workers say the job cuts have lowered morale, and some politicians want to know whether the company is violating any laws.

In March, state Assemblyman James Whelan, D-Atlantic, asked the state Labor Department to investigate.

The mayor of Evansville, Ind., where Columbia Sussex has a riverboat casino, has made a similar request to the gaming commission in his state, where the company has also been laying off workers.

However, the limo drivers may not be entirely out of luck.

Atlantic Limousine Inc., which had previously contracted for a chunk of the casino's limo business, is now getting it all. As part of a deal to take on the remainder of the business, the company agreed to hire displaced drivers, said casino spokeswoman Courtney Birmingham.

"All of the employees who are qualified, as far as my company is concerned, will have a job," said Dan Geiger, president of the Atlantic City-based company.

Tropicana driver Steven Saglia said the casino called him on Monday to tell him his job was being cut. He would have celebrated his 24th anniversary with the company on Thursday.

He said the drivers made a maximum wage of $10.68 per hour. But with tips, they can bring in $40,000 to $50,000 per year.
