Lone Star Park Entries

By Gary West
Star-Telegram horse racing writer Gary West highlights his picks for today's races. Odds are provided by Lone Star Park with program number, weight and jockey.

9th The closing-day feature at Lone Star is the $65,000 Middleground Stakes, named for the Texas-bred who won the 1950 Kentucky Derby and Belmont. Several of these 2-year-olds seem very close in ability. But Sir Five Star, who's 6-1 in the morning line, could offer some value in the short-term futures market. He finished seventh in the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, but with a soupcon of racing luck, he probably would have finished third. Mary's Gray Boy ran third in a recent stakes, Eldon's Effort won his debut impressively, Devils Warrior is quick, and Real Quiet Man could enjoy a perfect stalking trip. They all have a chance here, but if he gets the trip, Sir Five Star should prove tough.

3rd Before her race on July 2, Fur Elise misbehaved in both the paddock and the post parade. Her mind obviously wasn't on racing, and she finished fifth. But on July 15, she was a model of composure as she went onto the track, and a moment later she drew clear in the stretch to win by seven lengths. With her best effort, Fur Elise is very capable of winning again here, and if you watch her carefully, she'll probably tell you if she's going to give that kind of effort.

4th Sweepingly is another who can misbehave from time to time. He was trying to jump into the adjacent stall when the doors of the gate opened to begin his most recent race. Still, with a win here, he could tie a Lone Star record with five for the season. He's very fast, of course, but others in here are capable of making him work on the pace. But he's the one to beat simply because of his toughness; he won't surrender. And so he could be keyed in exactas with Dr. Meatball and Satellite, who should benefit from a lively pace to offer a challenge in the stretch.
