Following up a record $1.52 billion sales year for 2005-06, the state Lottery kicked off the new budget year with record sales for the month of July.
Overall, July sales were $138.18 million, up $8 million — or 6 percent — over July 2005. The figure was also up 10 percent over June 2006 sales.
The state’s share of the profits for the month was $56.7 million.
As usual, the revenue figures were driven by increases in video lottery play.
Gross terminal revenue for the 11,282 active racetrack video slot machines totaled $90.6 million, up 3 percent from the previous July.
Limited video lottery revenue, from 7,886 active machines in licensed bars, clubs and fraternal organizations across the state, topped $30.9 million, up 11 percent from July 2005.
At the end of July, limited video machines were operating in 1,526 licensed retail locations, and in 185 fraternal organizations statewide.
State Lottery profits have increased each year of its 20-year existence, but Lottery Director John Musgrave has predicted that trend will end in the 2006-07 budget year, with the oft-delayed launch of competing video slot machines in Pennsylvania expected later this year.
The Lottery’s so-called traditional games also saw a sales bump in July.
Scratch-off instant games produced $9 million in sales, up 15 percent or $1 million over the previous July. July 2006’s sales figures were enhanced with the introduction of one new $5 game and two new $2 games.
Online sales were $7.6 million, up $1.8 million or 22 percent, from July 2005. Online sales this July benefited from a $155 million Powerball jackpot. Powerball sales jumped 50 percent from July 2005, which had a top jackpot of $62 million, for a total of $4.87 million.
