State lottery chairman Charles Sanders says he's resigning from the state lottery commission, one year after taking charge of starting North Carolina's game from birth.
It's no surprise that Sanders is leaving. He told Gov. Easley a year ago that he planned only to work on the lottery during its start-up phase.
Speaking today, Sanders says he's proud of the state lottery's creation, but he also says North Carolinians shouldn't expect it to solve education funding problems in the state.
Sanders, once the head of pharmaceutical giant Glaxo, oversaw the hiring of lottery director Tom Shaheen in December. Instant ticket sales began four months later. The jackpot game Powerball began two months after that, in late May.
The lottery's creation was approved by narrow votes last year in the Legislature. It was dogged from the start with questions about ethics and its creation. Three commissioners resigned in the early stages.
