The Kansas Lottery Commission on Monday didn't act on a request by the Ford County Commission to extend by one day its deadline for receiving casino applications.
The deadline for proposals in Ford County had been 5 p.m. Dec. 26. However, Epic Gaming Dodge City LLC said it wasn't able to meet that deadline because of technical difficulties in producing its application.
The lottery commission discussed the issue during a special meeting Monday before recessing to investigate further. The commission is set to reconvene Jan. 7 to discuss the issue again and possibly take action.
Ford County is allowed to have a single casino under a new gambling law passed in 2007 by the Kansas Legislature. Butler National Service Corp. and Dodge City Resort and Gaming Co. were the only two firms to propose casinos for Ford County by the Dec. 26 deadline.
However, the Ford County Commission has asked the lottery commission to extend, retroactively, that deadline by one day to allow Epic Gaming to participate.
"We believe it is in the best interest of both the state and Ford County to qualify as many applicants as possible for the selection process of the casino developer in our locale," said Ford County Commission Chair T. Kim Goodnight, in a letter to the lottery commission.
