FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A million-dollar lottery prize has come in the nick of time for a North Carolina man.
Larry Williams runs a center that offers free meals and classes for people working to get a high-school equivalency certificate. But he's been struggling to keep it open.
He resorted to using his veterans disability payments to help keep The Hands That Help Center going, but it wasn't enough. The Fayetteville center fell six months behind in the rent, the roof was leaking, and in April the utilities were cut off.
Two weeks ago, the center president prayed for help. A few days later, Williams bought a scratch-off lottery ticket in South Carolina — and won $1-million.
Williams spent some of the money on himself and his family. He also paid the back rent on the center and got the power turned back on.
Now Williams thinks the center will be able to continue helping up to 75 people a day.
