MPs: TV quiz shows equate to gambling

Thursday, January 25 2007, 14:18 GMT

By Joanne Oatts, Media Correspondent

A group of MPs has said that late-night TV quiz shows should fall under gambling laws.

The culture, media and sport committee said the programmes were "unfair" and encouraged viewers to call even when they could not win any prizes.

The committee added that programmes should get approval from a third-party before they are broadcast and that viewers should be given more information about the likelihood of getting through to the studio, and be told the cost of repeat calls.

John Whittingdale, the committee's chairman, said they had heard "disturbing evidence" of people being encouraged to call more times than they could afford, with one person racking up a bill of £348 for 15 calls to quiz channels, and a parent whose son and his babysitter managed £700 worth calls.

ITV Play was recently rapped by media regulator Ofcom for making its answers too obscure.

Viewers complained after the correct answers to the question "What items might be found in a woman's handbag?" turned out to be a balaclava and raw plugs.

in this quiz mania game there were 14 items callers could identify from a woman's purse. Seven of the prizes or items included - contact lenses, driving licence and plane tickets. the next two items would be a surprising most women's purses ;'raw/rawl plugs' and 'balaclava' . With baleclava beening:
1. A warm woolen hood covering the head and neck, worn especially by mountain climbers and skiers.
2. A similarly styled hood often covering the shoulders, as worn by soldiers and sailors or as protective clothing.
and what a raw plug is remains a mystery to this writer.

Heh, that definitely sounds like gambling to me. How many thousands of things I can find in my wife's purse is incalcuable. Anyone can be right or wrong on that kind of question. Quiz?? That is definetly a game of chance -- the only accurate answer would be "the fourteen things whoever made up the answers came up with"

Well if this is a game of skill then I think they simutaneously made poker a game of skill, too.

I just read an article about a poker room operator in Europe who lost his court case because the judge decided poker was a game of chance? and he needed a casino license to run his poker games. There seems to be no skill in this quiz game whatsoever...

There's no way this could be counted as a game of skill. Some of the random things you'd find in my purse on any given day would amaze you. Depending on our errands on my husband's day off, my purse can contain anything from DVD's to dog medication. LOL I'm betting nobody would guess that.

On a side note...... I thought balaclava was that Greek pastry with the nuts and honey. Goes to show what I know huh?
