For several years now Macau has been taking baby steps towards giving people on their side of the World an alternative to traveling across the globe to Las Vegas.

The time is closely approaching when their ambition will turn into reality as plans are under way on the Cotai Strip project, which will eventually bring over 20,000 hotel rooms in 14 hotels to Macau.

The Venetian Macau Resort Hotel already is open for business and features 30 restaurants, a 15,000 seat arena, 350 retail shops, and 3,000 all suite rooms. The building is the second biggest building in the World, and is the biggest hotel in Asia.

Up until now, most of Macau's visitors came over on ferries from Hong Kong, and with no accommodations, their visits averaged only one day. The addition of these hotels will certainly change the length of visits for gamblers in the future.

The head of this project, Sheldon Adelson, one of the richest businessmen in the World and CEO and owner of the Las Vegas Sands, says that the idea is to create a mini Las Vegas.

The challenge for Adelson once the hotel rooms are in place is whether he will be able to keep the over 20,000 rooms occupied enough of the time to make the project a success.

Only time will tell the answer to that question.
