Maryland Sire Stakes raced at Rosecroft
Fort Washington, MD --- Four $3,000 preliminary divisions of the Maryland Sire Stakes for 2- and 3-year-old trotters were raced this past Tuesday at Rosecroft Raceway, in preparation for the finals that will be raced on September 16, Showcase of Champions Week.
Two early races were contested; the first was a trot for freshman fillies. The field of four was full of misbehavers: Three of the fillies broke stride, which resulted in a win by Secret Impression (Corey Braden). The Go Get Lost filly owned by Pamela Wagner and trained by Manley Brown, Jr. wired the field with an easy mile timed in 2:083.
Perhaps one of the most impressive recoveries was by Struttin Gabi (Bill Long). The daughter of Presto Hanover, owned by James and Gladys Downs, broke stride on the clubhouse turn but managed to recover, make up ground, and finish only two lengths behind the winner.
In the second non-betting race Mandas Mistyclover was again the best for owners Donnie and Nancy Drewer. The 3-year-old Dedicated Yankee filly trained by Darryle Dennis trotted confidently through quarter-miles timed in :292, 1:011, and 1:312 and won in 2:022. Driven by Cliff Green, the filly notched her fourth win in 10 starts this year.
Whitesville Filly (W. David Hill III) charged late with a first-over bid and finished second. The Meadow Crown filly, owned and trained by Gary White, closed through a :301 final quarter-mile and finished three-quarter lengths behind the winner. Beautiful Dreamer (Corey Braden) finished third.
The first betting race of the evening featured 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings. With the 6-5 morning line choice of High Five scratched, sick, Kursk ($2.40, $2.10, $2.10) and Kelly Staten took center stage. The son of Go Get Lost, owned by Shirley Shand and trained by Ken Shand, had finished second to High Five in three prior Sire Stakes. This week, however, Kursk dominated the field through a mile timed in 2:022.
Jimmy And Josh ($2.20, $2.10) rallied late and finished second for driver Chris Offutt. The Ayres Crown colt, owned and trained by Leon Harris, closed very well and made up more than four lengths in the stretch and finished a neck behind the winner. Magic Mountain ($2.10), driven by Corey Braden, finished third. The Trifecta paid $12.20.
In the final division for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters, Honolulu Hunk ($6.20, $3.40, $2.40) was by far the best, and set a new lifetime mark of 1:583 when he won by more than 17 lengths. Driven by trainer Jerry Nock, the Program Speed colt raced strongly through quarter-miles timed in :30, 1:003, and 1:293 and then drew away. Honolulu Hunk races for owner Bill Clark, Jr.
The 1-9 choice, Misty Moonlight, broke at the gate with Manley Brown, Jr. in the sulky and was distanced throughout the mile. The Go Get Lost gelding had been dominating the Sire Stakes with three wins and has a mark of 1:584.
Misty Moonlight's entrymate, A Century Later ($2.20, $2.10), held on and finished second with driver Donnie Russell aboard, and Easily Distracted ($4.80) finished third for driver Corey Braden. The Trifecta paid $190.40.
Live racing will resume at Rosecroft on Saturday, starting at 7:20 p.m. (EDT). There will be four early, non-betting Sire Stakes on the card, the first of which will begin at 6:30 p.m. |
