McConnell criticised for failing to support city super-casino bid
CRAIG BROWN

BUSINESS leaders have condemned Jack McConnell's failure to back Glasgow's bid for the UK's first super-casino, claiming the Scottish Executive's lack of support is damaging the city's efforts to secure the deal.

The criticism came after the First Minister declined to give a firm reply when questioned over the Executive's stance in relation to a large casino resort being built in Glasgow.

Addressing local businessmen at a breakfast held by the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in a hotel yesterday, Mr McConnell said the Executive would need to "weigh up" the benefits the initiative could bring in jobs and to the local economy against the potential risk it posed of increasing problem gambling.

He added: "Clearly, Glasgow is going to be competing with a number of locations across the UK, and that will be quite a difficult competition to win. So when we take our decision, we will have to have that combination of economic and social in mind, we will be looking to see whatever development took place would not have an adverse social impact even if it was having a very positive economic impact on the city and the wider region."

He said that if turned out the economic benefits outweighed the social, then the Executive would want to back it.

Already several major Las Vegas firms have put forward proposals for sites in the city, including a site at Rangers' ground Ibrox, which gained planning permission late last year.

But Dr Lesley Sawers, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, warned that the Executive's ambivalence was damaging the campaign: "We are disappointed that the First Minister is unable to give the super-casino's bid his full support.

"It is essential that Glasgow's bid has the Executive's full backing to strengthen the city's case to the commission which is due to make its decision on the location of the first super-casino later this year.

"There is a limited time left for the Executive to make its views on this issue clear and we would push for this to be done urgently. The longer this is delayed the greater the risk that Glasgow may lose out."

A Glasgow City Council spokesman said any concerns the Executive had about the social impact would be tackled. "Glasgow's bid for the regional casino licence is compelling in terms of regeneration and the city economy. If successful, we are committed to working with operators to ensure safeguards are in place which will help to address the issues surrounding problem gambling."
