Meskwaki Tribe Consider Alcohol at Casino
By Claire Kellett, KCRG-TV9 News
MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT - A proposal to sell alcohol at the Meskwaki Casino is creating controversy. It's the only tribal casino in the state and it's the only Iowa casino that does not sell alcohol.
Thursday night about 100 tribal members met with casino officials in a closed-door meeting, which lasted three hours.
Afterward, Meskwaki tribal leader Larry Lasley said the session was very productive. He said after an hour-long presentation from the casino, tribal members had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments.
The casino says alcohol sales would boost attendance, increase profits, and give the casino more of a destination resort feel.
But Lasley says members must consider "...what kind of negative impact might be had on the clientele with regard to the existing environment there and also what negative message may be sent to the young people of the tribe."
Lasley tells TV9 there was not an actual vote on whether or not to put the issue on a ballot. But he says there will likely be areferendum vote in about a month.
