BOSTON -- The financial backers of the Mashpee Wampanoag Indians have agred to purchase 125 acres of land in Middleborough that could be used to build a casino.
Representatives of Detroit casino developer Herb Strather are paying $1.7 million for the parcels of land on Precinct Street.
Middleborough Selectman Wayne Perkins said the land is in a rural section of town, close to Route 44.
Perkins supports the idea of a casino, saying it will create jobs for the area.
Middleborough and New Bedford contacted the Cape Cod tribe in recent months to make their pitch as a good casino site if the state expands legalized gambling.
The Mashpee Wampanoag received federal recognition as a tribe in February and tribal leaders have made it clear they'll seek legislation allowing casino gambling.
Chairman Glenn Marshall told The Boston Globe the tribe hasn't decided on Middleborough, but wanted to act when the land came up for auction. He said it could also be used for tribal housing. |
