WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) _ The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Council will expand a north country casino, adding a 400-room hotel and possibly doubling the current payroll, officials said Wednesday.
The tribe plans to invest $100 million or more into the project at Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. The projected changes would relocate the Mohawk Bingo Palace to the casino and add a convention center and up to eight restaurants.
The casino currently employs about 700 people.
The tribe announced the changes after watching a steady growth of business at the casino since 1999.
"Our current facility, without having lodging and without having more restaurants, we're really just a day trip," said James W. Ransom, one of three chiefs on Tribal Council. "We need to become a destination."
The tribe is still working out the details of what table, slot and other offerings the new development will have to offer.
