MOHEGAN STORY:
The design of Mohegan Sun's Project Horizon draws inspiration from the idea of "The Source," a concept with special meaning to the Mohegan Tribe. The new hotel, casino, retail, dining and entertainment space will represent the Tribe's growth and future, physically and spiritually linking the existing Casino of the Earth and Casino of the Sky.
In Project Horizon, water, the ultimate source of life, will serve as a key design feature. At the center of the new hotel lobby, a reflecting pool will evoke the spirits of the sea, earth and sky, while thirteen springs represent the new generations that will prosper from the Tribe's vision.
While alluding to the future, The Source is housed in a structure that honors the past. The rough stone architecture of the lobby space itself will represent a "memory pile," a collection of twigs, rocks and offerings that Mohegans created at crossroads while traveling the land.
The artery connecting The Source to the Casino of the Earth is inspired by coastal life and Moshup, the spirit of the sea. Moshup was believed to light his pipe with lightning, and this will be represented through the fire islands in the reflecting pool and the fire sconces along the route to the casino. The cast terrazzo flooring will contain whale bones and sea shells, while columns of ash wood inlaid with glass tile will line the path.
The artery connecting The Source to the Casino of the Sky will reference the spirit of the land and represents the garden of Granny Squannit, an ancient Mohegan healer and the wife of Moshup. Terrazzo flooring here will be embedded with herbs, and furnishings in organic shapes line the walkway.
