The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority announced Wednesday an agreement under which former Pocono Downs owner Penn National Gaming will refund $30 million of the $280 million purchase price. Downs president Robert Soper said the payments, scheduled over five years, will allow the authority to continue development of a slot machine casino at the harness track. A career fair has been scheduled for Sept. 12 and 13 at the Wachovia Arena as the Downs prepares to hire approximately 400 people needed to staff a temporary casino that could open as early as December. A permanent casino, which could be open in early 2008, is expected to employ up to 1,000 people.
The state Gaming Control Board has said it expects to grant conditional temporary licenses to racetrack casinos by the end of September. A public hearing on the Downs’ application is scheduled for Sept. 11 in Harrisburg.
