Mojica Returns To Indiana

Orlando Mojica, 25, has been away from Hoosier Park since 2003, but he has already had a positive start for the 2007 season. Mojica grabbed three race wins Friday, Sept. 7, starting with the fifth race and ending the night with wins in the last two events.
Winning at Hoosier Park is not at all foreign to Mojica, who is one of only three jockeys to win 100 races in a season. Mojica was the last person to achieve this feat in 2003. Previously, Jon Court won 118 in 2001 and Terry Thompson holds the record for most wins in one meet at 122 set in 1998.
Orlando is not the sole Mojica in horse racing. Originally from Puerto Rico, his uncle and father began racing. Orlando’s brother, Rafael, competed at Hoosier Park during the 2006 Thoroughbred season when Orlando was at racing at Turfway Park. This year, the brothers have flipped positions.
“My brother is in Kentucky this year riding,” said Mojica. “My dad and uncles also are involved in horse racing in Puerto Rico.”
Even though Mojica has not raced at Hoosier Park since 2003, he is still familiar with a track he says has not changed much since then. Mojica also said he is using his connections made at Hoosier Park to his advantage.
“I have picked up some of my old business,” added Mojica. “Not much has changed here in the three years since I left. There are some good riders, but many of the top riders from when I was here last are still around.”
Even though Mojica recognizes there are many good riders, he expressed hope that he will have success in the 2007 season. He plans to devote most of his time to Hoosier Park with an occasional trip to Turfway Park to race on the weekends.
“I plan to be here at Hoosier Park all meet,” said Mojica. “I hope to make some money up here. I would like to be leading rider again.”
