KEEPING Bushy Park as the home of motor sports in Barbados is part of a goal to develop this island into a noted venue for international motor sports competition. Speaking to the Business Monday, prominent local businessman, Ralph "Bizzy" Williams, stated that the Williams Industries group is ready to take to the lead in the creation of a world renowned name for Barbados in motor sports.

Part of this plan surrounds the maintenance of Bushy Park not only as the home of local motor sports, but also as a venue possessing international standards to be used in international competitions. He argued that outside of golf, Barbados does not possess a name in any other international sport in the truest sense, given the fact that cricket is not really a completely global sport.

He pointed to the development of the St. Philip facility to a level where it could host the international Formula A1 competition, which unlike the Formula 1 competition that takes place between teams of manufactures, is a competition between international territories. Williams therefore argues that this would be a significant link to international tourism, as it would bring widespread exposure to the island, as teams from all around the world would be participating.

Apart from being a link to tourism, he stated that this would also result in the transfer of technology to the island, and also an influx of foreign exchange, given the volume of persons that would be coming with these teams, inclusive of crews and families.

With regards to the current situation surrounding Bushy Park, where the plans that were earmarked for the facility included the development of a golf course and high-end residential area, Williams argued that the land area is not suited to the development of a golf course, however, what the owners of the land are hoping for is the granting of a casino license, which would bring significant revenue. However, currently the Government of Barbados has taken a no nonsense approach to casino gambling, and are committed to keeping the practice out of Barbados.

Coming up on September 2nd, Bushy Park will be the venue of an international race meet, where 24 international competitors from the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Vincent, among others will be taking part. Williams industries has put a lot of money into the hosting of event, including footing the bill for the transport and storage of the overseas vehicles, as well as structural adjustments to the venue. This in itself is an example of the company's commitment to the further development of the sport, as well as the enhancement of its international appeal.
