Multnomah casino won't make November ballot
Backers of a proposed casino in east Multnomah County said Monday they will wait until 2008 to ask voters to change the state Constitution to allow what would be the state's first non-tribal gambling complex.

Roger Gray, the political consultant for entrepreneurs Bruce Studer and Matthew Rossman, said backers simply ran out of time to qualify initiatives for the Nov. 7 ballot.

The casino would be located at the defunct greyhound track in Wood Village, with 25 percent of gambling proceeds going to the state. Tribal gambling interests were successful in delaying a pair of ballot measures sought by Studer and Rossman.

One of the measures would have removed the constitutional prohibition on casinos and the other would have sited the casino at the dog track. Gray said Studer and Rossman would refile the initiatives in the next few weeks with an aim toward getting on the 2008 ballot.

Gray also said that the two would reveal their financial backers later this year. The pair have come under fire for not saying who is financing their effort.
