ATLANTA -- A videotape delivered to Channel 2 purports to reveal a shady trip to Las Vegas by 3-term Gwinnett County Commissioner Kevin Kenerly.
Whoever sent the tape hired a Vegas private eye to get the video inside Caesar’s Palace. It’s certainly a high-tech turn on local politics, but Kenerly calls it a new low – and it’s not clear that he did what his anonymous critic claims.
The video shows Kenerly gambling in Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas with developers.
Commissioner Kenerly says anyone who knows him knows that he goes to Vegas to gamble and play golf just about every March. But the private investigator’s tape focuses on the presence of local developers – and a narrator accuses Kenerly of taking favors from them.
According the tape narrator, “He stayed in a thousand dollar a night suite, that he did not pay for.”
This afternoon, Kenerly laid out his cancelled checks and credit card bills. There is a $20,000 check to Caesar’s Palace – and payments to American Express and VISA totaling another $37,000. He says the trip was entirely on him.
“I paid for everybody’s room. They’re right here…paid for everybody’s airlines, paid for everybody’s ride to the casino and I paid for everybody’s food. I paid for everything,” says Kenerly.
But Kenerly acknowledges that critics might question why he and local developers are at the same hotel at the same time.
“There was a lot of other people there. Yes, did I socialize and talk to them? Yes, I did. Does that mean they get any more benefits than anybody else? No it does not,” Kenerly says.
We asked if he worried about how it looks to voters.
“Perception is everything with the voters, but I think my record over the past 12 years shows that Kevin Kenerly – doesn’t matter where he goes or who he’s seen with – is going to make the best decision for Gwinnett County,” he said.
Whoever provided the tape also provided a copy of Kenerly’s hotel bill, but it doesn’t appear to support the allegation that someone else paid his way.
“I can’t say that I know exactly who did it, but I think it’s one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen,” says Kenerly.
A spokeswoman for Jodie Rosser – a Republican opponent of Kenerly – says Rosser had nothing to do with the tape.
Butch Poss – another Republican opponent – says he didn’t even know of the tape until we told him.
The private investigator would not reveal who hired him. We were not able to reach any of the developers. |
