And isn't it a hallmark of a free society that we don't outlaw otherwise inoffensive vices simply because some people harm themselves? - LA Times Editorial

Gambling news from http://www.wral.com/

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A dining program supervisor at N.C. State University faces disciplinary action for using a school computer to play in online poker tournaments after a state auditor's report said the games violated law and policies.

Investigators from the auditor's office visited the employee's office and copied the contents of his computer's hard drive, according to an auditor's report released Wednesday.

The employee said he used the university computer for online poker games after work. The auditor's report said it didn't appear that state funds were used.

N.C. State Chancellor Jim Oblinger said that the employee still has his job and wouldn't identify the person. Oblinger said a punishment hadn't been determined.

University rules don't ban personal use of state computers, but using them for personal gain is prohibited and it is against the law to bet on games of chance.

Okay, I'm a supporter of internet gambling, but not from work. How stupid is that? Especially right now. I don't think anyone has the right to tell you what you can do in your own home with your own computer (with obvious exceptions of anything involving minors), but your computer at work should only be used for work. I don't even think it's right when people use their work computer to play solitaire or minesweeper.

I know it is stupid, but he was doing it after hours. I know, I know, he was still using their resources, blah, blah, blah. But I've known plenty of people who used the computer both during office hours and after office hours for personal stuff, including playing games. And I worked in the IT industry!

So you can't use university computers for personal gain, what happens if he lost?

If you like videogames, come see me at Gaming Evolved Forum (I'm Eyes Only over there too)

Even if he had lost, that was not his intention. He was hoping to win, therefore he was still using it for personal gain.

Even if it was after hours, it was still wrong. If I owned a business, I wouldn't want an employee using the computer for anything that wasn't work related. I've learned, from letting friends and relatives use my computer, that when you allow people to just freely roam the internet on a computer that isn't their responsibility, they really don't give much thought to spyware and viruses. If this guy wanted to play on the computer, he needed to get a computer of his own and play at home.
