N.H. lawmakers resist casino bill

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- A push to build casinos in the state is having little luck in the Legislature.

A bill sponsored by state Senator John Gallus, R-Berlin, would allow two casinos: one in Berlin and one at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth.

The Senate Ways and Means Committee voted last week against recommending the bill.

The bill could still be heard on the Senate floor, but the committee’s recommendations are usually upheld.

Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand, one of several Democrats hoping to run against U.S. Sen. John Sununu next year, claims that’s good luck for Portsmouth and surrounding towns. Most Seacoast residents oppose a casino, he said.
