Casino News from http://www.projo.com/

Everett Brown had spent $46 at the nickel slot machines at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino when he hit the jackpot -- $375,179.

NORTH SMITHFIELD -- Everett Brown never got to use his ticket for last weekend's car races in Delaware, but he's not complaining.

That's because during his semiannual trip to Dover International Speedway to see the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Brown took his chances on the nickel slots and won.

Big.

"I went there for car racing and I won at the slot machines," said Brown, 61, a plumbing and heating contractor. "It changed my whole weekend."

A $100 bill turned into a $375,179.87 windfall for Brown. According to a news release from the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, the jackpot is the largest prize ever given away at the casino. Representatives from the casino could not be reached for comment yesterday evening.

Since 1973, Brown has never missed a trek to Delaware for the races each June and September. But he didn't begin gambling at the casino until five years ago -- and even then, only sporadically, he said.

When Brown and a friend got up Saturday morning before the races, they went down to the casino to pass the time. Brown made his way to the machines they'd scouted the night before and slid a $100 bill into the video slot machine. He was $46 into his game when he realized he'd won.

Initially, Brown thought he'd won 10,000 nickels -- or $500. Even as the bells rang and lights flashed all around him, Brown said he didn't connect all of the fanfare to his winnings.

"The woman sitting next to me had to point out exactly what happened -- that I'd won the jackpot," he said.

The machine on which Brown won was a progressive slot, which means it was linked to a network of slot machines at two other casinos in the state. When Brown won, the jackpots on all the linked machines were reset to $25,000.

As a jackpot winner, Brown was treated to a hotel suite and free admission to the skybox for the race. He also received pit and garage tours at the speedway, which shares property with the casino.

"I was a celebrity down there," Brown said. "At least they make you feel like one. They treated me like a king."

Before Saturday's win, Brown said the most he'd won was $6,000 at the Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut, where he gambles almost every weekend.

The money will allow Brown, a car lover, to speed up plans to build a retirement home in Murphy, N.C., "right in the middle of NASCAR country," he said. He'd bought the property and planned to build his home there over the next four years.

But besides that, Brown said not too much will change with his newfound wealth.

He said he plans to continue with his company, Brown Plumbing and Heating, a commercial plumbing business. On Monday, he was picking up a vehicle he needed for a job this morning.

"This is not going to change me," he said. "Why would it?"

Brown already has his tickets for his trips to the speedway in September and next June.
