Nation’s harness racing leaders converge on Tioga Downs
Nichols, NY — The nation’s leading harness racing trainers, drivers and horses will compete at the Tioga Downs racetrack on Sunday, July 23, and Monday, July 24, as the Tompkins-Geers Sire Stakes Races fill the card for Southern Tier sports fans, according to organizers.
As part of the 2006 Grand Circuit Races, 2-year-old colt and 2-year-old filly races in both pace and trot categories will be held at the new track in Nichols. Post time Sunday is 12:45 p.m. while Monday’s racing will get under way at 6:50 p.m.
“The Tompkins-Geers event at our track is the equivalent of the most exciting playoff games in professional sports,” observed Jason Settlemoir, VP of Racing Operations and Simucast at Tioga Downs. “It is an honor to hold this event here in the Southern Tier at Tioga Downs.”
Among the drivers at the top of the Grand Circuit standings who will be on hand are John Campbell, Brian Sears, Catello “Cat” Manzi and George Brennan.
During the races on Sunday and Monday, Dave Brower, track handicapper and morning line odds maker from the Meadowlands, will be doing on-air handicapping for race and Simulcast fans.
After the races on Sunday, there will be a VIP party in the trackside tent for horse owners, trainers, drivers, grooms and members of the press.
To get to the track, take exit 62 off NY-17. You must be 18 years old to wager or play gaming machines. “Please play responsibly,” organizers urge.
