New Bedford Taking Chance On Casino Bid
Tribe To Meet With Mayor
POSTED: 6:41 am EDT May 21, 2007
BOSTON -- A lot has been said and written about Middleborough, Mass., becoming the chosen site for an Indian casino, but New Bedford is also still in the running.
NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that Monday representatives of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe will meet with the mayor of New Bedford to discuss building a casino in the Whaling City.
Currently, the biggest drawback is the cost of acquiring property, and the Wampanoags already have control of 325 acres in Middleborough.
But those who are pitching gambling in New Bedford said the waterfront city has more to offer, including a fishing fleet and historic buildings. The tribe, also, already has an office in New Bedford and an available labor force.
The unemployment rate was recently more than 9 percent, and city officials say a casino would bring much-needed jobs to the region.
Before opening a casino anywhere, the tribe needs approval from the state Legislature.
This summer, a specially-appointed governor's committee is slated to release recommendations regarding gaming in Massachusetts. |
