Are casinos or a state-run lottery the answer to all of Alabama's financial woes? Let's ask New Jersey. They have both, but somehow that state got shut own due to a $4.5 billion budget deficit. How could this happen since all we hear is that gaming revenue is a gold mine just waiting for us to tap it?
Atlantic City jumped from 15th to first in the nation's per capita crime charts in just three years. The city's police budget tripled to $24 million while the local population decreased by 20 percent. This is not a case of mishandled money on New Jersey's part, this is the norm.
John Kindt, professor of commerce and legal policy at the University of Illinois states that for every dollar of revenue generated by gambling, taxpayers must dish out at least $3 in increased criminal justice cost, social welfare expenses, high regulatory cost and increased infrastructure expenditures.
Is Alabama willing to turn its back on the morals and values it has held for generations to become another victim of the gaming industries lies and false promises?
Let's learn from other's mistakes and not repeat them. Let's not abandon biblically based values for the love of money.
