New Slots Payout Controversy at New Casino
By Chad Pradelli
CHESTER, Pa. - February 16, 2007 - A Philadelphia woman is licking her wounds after a very frustrating and disappointing night at the new Harrah's Chester casino.
She went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. Under the bright lights of the casino, Nola Brittingham said feelings of jubilation turned to injustice while playing the slots.
"One of the attendants on the floor ran up to me and hollered, 'you hit the progressive jackpot! You hit the progressive jackpot!'" explained Brittingham.
That would have meant roughly $4500. Brittingham's sister, who was playing nearby, couldn't believe it.
"He was so happy. He was telling everyone she won. It was incredible," said Lea Robinson.
But within a few minutes the sisters said casino supervisors were singing a different tune.
"Employee error is what they said. They said that he misread the computer when he said I hit the jackpot," she said.
Brittingham said the machine indicated she had won 100 bucks, not 45-hundred.
This is just the latest controversy at Harrah's. Earlier this month, a routine maintenance of the slots system caused it to go haywire, delaying payouts for hours and leaving patrons furious.
Last month, a retired carpenter apparently hit a $100,000 jackpot at Philadelphia Park, but employees at the Bensalem casino told him it was a mistake - a malfunction. They blamed an in-house computer system. He eventually got paid.
Brittingham wants the same outcome.
"It's almost like a robbery without a gun. You can't take people's money like that, and then not pay them. It's not fair," she said.
Action News made repeated calls to Harrah's to hear the company's side of the story, but none of those calls has been returned. |
