When she learned she had won a million dollars June 27, May Peach-Peterson of Kingsville called her son from the Giant supermarket in White Marsh.
"I knew I couldn't drive," she said.
She had just made a purchase and asked the cashier to add $20 to the charge and give it to her in cash.
She took the $20 to the supermarket's courtesy counter and bought a single $20 scratch-off ticket in the Maryland Lottery's $20 Million Mania.
Scratching off the ticket, she saw a match. Two million-dollar icons were exposed.
Could it be?
After some discussion with the cashier and a phone call, it was clear - she had hit the jackpot.
Her son, John Peach Jr., was dubious when she called him for a ride.
"I told him I won a million" she said. " He didn't think that was correct. He came over to soften the blow and tell me I was poor again."
Two hours later, they were all getting the red carpet treatment at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
Peach-Peterson, 65, is a Harford County native who has lived in Kingsville for 24 years. She worked as a private duty nurse for 30 years before retiring two years ago.
Her initial plan for the money is to pay off the mortgage on her house.
She's the mother of three adult sons, all of whom live nearby, and said her first grandchild is due in early February.
"That kid's going to have the most bodacious nursery you ever saw," she said.
Any other thoughts she cares to share?
"You gotta play to win," she said
