North Side will market itself as family stop, despite casino
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH - A group that has been trying to market the North Side as a family destination is now trying to figure out how a casino will fit into its plans.
The North Side includes the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, two sports stadiums, museums, the National Aviary and the Carnegie Science Center, which is located next to the future home of the city's only slots parlor. Last week, the state regulators awarded the slots license to a development group that plans to build the Majestic Star Casino there.
"We're still trying to assess the situation. It all came down literally minutes before the holidays," Bill Schlageter, director of marketing for the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Mark Fatla, executive director of the North Side Leadership Conference, said he doesn't believe the area will lose its family appeal once the casino comes.
"We have world-class museums, world-class views and grand parks. The identity of the neighborhood will not be defined by the casino," Fatla said.
