Ohkay Owingeh, formerly known as San Juan Pueblo, has started construction on a 36,000-square-foot conference center, as an expansion to the Ohkay Casino & Resort, located two miles north of Espanola.
The $10 million conference center, which is being built by Gerald Martin, is scheduled to be complete by July 2007. Leo A. Daly of Phoenix, Ariz. is the architect.
"The Espanola area is in need of a large meeting conference facility. We look forward to meeting with the community and our neighbors to attract conferences to the area and to provide a first class facility to the area's residents," says Ohkay Owingeh Governor, Joe Garcia, in a news release.
Tsay Corp., the economic development arm of Ohkay Owingeh, which has a population of 2,500 residents, employs more than 450 people throughout Northern New Mexico. The pueblo's combined economic development ventures spend more than $12 million throughout the state on goods and services, adds the release.
