Isaac 'westmenloAA' Baron Takes Down Full Tilt $750,000-Guaranteed Tournament and Closes Gap With Top Two in OPOY

With a week having passed since the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker main event and one month until the Full Tilt Online Poker Series VI, it was business as usual for the major poker sites. But simply because the tournament schedule was back to normal didn't mean the Card Player Online Player of the Year-race contenders would be sitting back to watch.

Isaac "westmenloAA" Baron (aka mjorgenson13 on Full Tilt) proved this when he earned 1,200 OPOY points by taking down the Full Tilt $750,000-guaranteed tournament to hop over both "Andy McLEOD" and Chad "lilholdem954" Batista into third place in the standings. Baron had 5,004 points before last night, but now has 6,204, which puts him just 520 points behind leader board leader Matt "ch0ppy" Kay and 84 points behind Sorel "Imper1um" Mizzi in second place. As a measure of comparison, a win in any OPOY-qualified tournament (which awards a minimum of 120 points) would put Baron into second place. A top-five finish in one of the Sunday majors could either put him in first place or incredibly close.

Recaps of last night's events follow:

PokerStars Sunday Million

Attendance at the PokerStars Sunday Million was down slightly this week when 6,330 entrants bucked up the $200 buy-in. The Sunday Million held before the WCOOP (on Sept. 9) had 6,483 entrants. Nevertheless, last night's event had a prize pool of $1,266,000 and had $182,000 on the table for the first-place finisher. Both Steve "stevejpa" Paul-Ambrose and Faraz "The-Toilet 0" Jaka, both prominent Internet players, very nearly made the final table of the event before finishing in 10th and 12th, respectively (both earning $5,823).

Haligon eventually bested the final-table participants, and because of a four-way deal, he received $132,000 for his win.

The final results were:

Haligon — $132,182 *

TeamWispy — $93,831 *

hansou — $85,875 *

dh3684 — $86,396 *

PkrHolic — $40,638
bb55 — $29,118
fladfisk111 — $20,889
zoomboy — $12,660
Urlings — $7,849
* Payout reflects a four-way deal made at the final table

Full Tilt $750,000 Guarantee

The Full Tilt $750,000-guaranteed tournament had an overlay once again last night when 3,570 entrants bought in. That attendance number meant that Full Tilt put up $36,000 to match the posted guarantee. Last week's event, which ran alongside the PokerStars WCOOP, had 3,709 entrants. Isaac "mjorgenson13" Baron made the final table of the event and eventually got heads up with jeppg1111. Mjorgenson13 raked in the final pot to earn almost $133,000 and yet another major online tournament title (he won the PokerStars Sunday Million on Jan. 28, 2007).

The final results were:

Isaac "mjorgenson13" Baron (aka "westmenloAA") — $132,787
jeppg1111 — $80,250
ATM4Life — $52,500

odky0201 — $23,025
Filip Demuinck — $17,250
rubbersoul — $13,500
Batman Wins — $10,050

UltimateBet $200,000 Guarantee

UltimateBet came out of pocket for $12,600 when 937 entrants bought into its $200,000-guaranteed tournament on Sunday. This was an improvement upon last week's 910 entrants. Jared "TheWacoKidd" Hamby — now part of Full Tilt's stock of sponsored pros — tried his luck on UltimateBet last night and bubbled the final table, finishing in 11th, for $1,600. The final three players in the event were Jeff "Uli Kunkel" Garza (aka "ActionJeff"), Tool_Triad, and mnsprout. Uli Kunkel was the first of those three to bust. He finished in third place, for $18,000. When it got down to heads-up play, mnsprout bested his opponent to pocket the $45,000 first-place prize.

The final results were:

mnsprout — $45,000
Tool_Triad — $26,500
Jeff "Uli Kunkel" Garza (aka ActionJeff) — $18,000
Trifecta07 — $13,100

Bodog $100,000 Guarantee

The Bodog $100,000-guaranteed tournament had 744 entrants last night. Bodog forked over $25,600 to match the guaranteed-prize pool for the event. Last week's event had barely more entrants with 747. Kirk50 — a player who had previously finished in third place in this event on June 17, 2007 — made the final table again last night. This time, however, he followed through and defeated his last-remaining opponent to collect the full $25,000 first-place prize.

The final results were:

Kirk50 — $25,000
BIANCHI — $14,300
daisyxoxo — $9,200
Sweet Cakes — $6,900
magpe — $5,500
Joe "Dyzalot" Morneau — $4,500
CrocHunter_SI — $3,500
crltruth — $2,500
BATS — $1,600
