With today’s Full Tilt Online Poker Series III (FTOPS III) main event looming, a respectable 558 players ponied up the $300 entry fee for last night’s H.A. tournament. The $167,400 prize pool was $17,400 over the posted guarantee, making for the ninth-straight event to avoid an overlay.
Among the prominent players to cash in the event was Thayer “THAY3R” Rasmussen (13th, $1423), Tim “Tmay420” West (25th, $753), and Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad (32nd, $628). Full Tilt-sponsored pro Berry Johnston also made money in the event, eventually finishing in 33rd, for $628.
LiLCartel had a tremendous lead coming into the final table. He sat down with over 44 percent of the chips in play, with $739,000 versus wrxtasy_03 in second with $235,000. Almost everyone was in a scramble to survive, as the blinds were at $5,000-$10,000 and more than half of the final table’s players had less than $100,000 in their stacks.
LiLCartel’s stack increased by a relatively small amount while players were eliminated all around him. He eliminated just one player from the table before three-way play began – wrxtasy_03 in fifth, for $10,881 – and only managed to profit $68,000 from the hand. By the time there were three players left, LiLCartel had lost the chip lead as a result of the previous elimination hand. Uisageezer, who knocked out poly_baller in fourth ($14,648), had $788,000 in his stack versus LiLCartel with $715,000. Patmcb had just $172,000, when the big blind was at $20,000, and he was hurting.
Despite a valiant, 20-minute effort by patmcb in which he held a stack worthy of second place at one point, he was the next player to be eliminated. In a hold’em round, patmcb pushed all in preflop for $183,000 after a raise from uisageezer. Uisageezer called and showed K Q and was up against the pocket treys of patmcb. The flop was relatively safe for patmcb when it came 4 4 2. The turn was also safe when it came 6. Patmcb had an 80 percent chance to win the hand and would only lose with a queen, king, or 6 (to counterfeit patmcb’s two pair) on the river. Against the odds, the 6 came on the river and patmcb was playing his 3 as a kicker. Uisageezer’s king kicker played to eliminate patmcb in third ($18,833).
Uisageezer had $975,000 going into the heads-up match versus LiLCartel with $699,000. The stacks had basically swapped before the final hand, four minutes later. In an Omaha round, LiLCartel made a pot-sized raise to $90,000 preflop and uisageezer reraised up to $270,000. LiLCartel reraised enough to put uisageezer all in and uisageezer called and showed 10 7 6 5. LiLCartel revealed A Q 10 7 as the flop came J 6 4, missing LiLCartel but giving uisageezer a pair of sixes. The turn put the A on the board, giving LiLCartel the lead with top pair. The river was the J, leaving both players with two pair, but LiLCartel with aces up to win the hand and eliminate uisageezer in second place. Uisageezer earned $25,947 for his finish, while LiLCartel pocketed $41,850 for his victory in the tournament. LiLCartel also earned an exclusive gold FTOPS jersey avatar for his win in the event.
