Full Tilt Online Poker Series Event No. 8: $125,000-Guaranteed Pot-Limit Hold’em
The Full Tilt Online Poker Series III (FTOPS III) continued its guarantee-busting streak with last night’s event. This is excellent news for the tournament series, considering the FTOPS II wasn’t so fortunate. In the FTOPS II, two events missed their guarantees (H.O.R.S.E. and limit hold’em), requiring Full Tilt to provide overlays, and those that made their guarantees sometimes barely snuck past them.
Last night’s tournament, the eighth event in the 10-event series, was a pot-limit hold’em tournament with $125,000 guaranteed. The event attracted 916 pot-limit players to plunk down $200 and join the fray in a fight for a piece of the $183,200 prize pool. A lot of the pros who finished deep in Thursday night’s event also finished deep last night, including Bryan “Micon” Micon (26th, $953), Scott “mindwise” Pendergrast (28th, $769), and Clonie Gowen (69th, $385). Full Tilt-sponsored pro David Chiu also made it deep in the event, eventually busting out in 16th, for $1,282.
Temaki had the largest stack of the final nine players, with $579,000. He was followed by REILLYS LUCK in second, at $543,000, and mcentinc in third, with $459,000. The other six players each had less than $300,000 in their stacks. REILLYS LUCK made an early exit in eighth place ($3,756) after losing some big hands and eventually being blinded all in.
Temaki personally eliminated four opponents on the path to three-way play, and in three of the elimination hands, he won when he drew out on his opponent with a dominated ace. Against Reds20 (seventh, $4,672), Temaki’s A-7 turned a nine-high straight against Reds20’s A-K. When eliminating ALLUCANEAT (sixth, $6,412), Temaki held A-Q versus ALLUCANEAT’s A-K and hit a queen on the turn. Finally, Random101 finished in fourth ($11,542) when his A-10 was outdrawn by Temaki’s A-4 with a river 4.
Temaki had a good-sized stack when three-way play began, sitting with $1.7 million versus Bricksteeler in second with $764,000 and mcentinc in third with $259,000. Over the next 10 minutes, mcentinc more than doubled up and now had Bricksteeler covered. All three players limped preflop and the flop came K 7 2. Bricksteeler and Temaki checked and mcentinc bet the pot, $90,000. Bricksteeler repotted up to $360,000, folding Temaki. Mcentinc pushed all in and Bricksteeler called and showed K 4 for top pair. Mcentinc turned over K 8 for top pair with a better kicker, and the lead. The turn and river were blanks and mcentinc took down the pot to eliminate Bricksteeler in third ($15,022).
That elimination hand put mcentinc in much better shape against Temaki with $1.1 million in chips versus Temaki’s $1.7 million. The very first hand of heads-up play would be a big one. Temaki raised to $90,000 preflop and mcentinc called. The flop came J J 6 and mcentinc checked. Temaki bet $90,000 and mcentinc raised up to $450,000. Temaki reraised to $1.5 million, enough to put mcentinc all in, and mcentinc called. Temaki revealed pocket eights for two pair, jacks up, but mcentinc flipped over J 5 for trip jacks and the lead. The turn and river were blanks and mcentinc took over the chip lead with $2.1 million against Temaki with $618,000.
The final hand was just one minute later. Mcentinc raised to $90,000 preflop and Temaki reraised up to $270,000. Mcentinc reraised enough to put Temaki all in and Temaki called and showed A 6. Mcentinc held Q J and it was virtually a coin-flip situation with Temaki holding a slight lead. The flop came 10 3 2, improving neither player. The turn was the J, spiking a pair for mcentinc and giving him the lead in the hand. The river was the K and Temaki was eliminated in second place ($21,618). Mcentinc raked in the final pot and walked away from the tournament with $35,010. He also earned an exclusive gold FTOPS jersey avatar for his win in the event.
The final results were:
1) mcentinc - $35,009.52
2) Temaki - $21,617.60
3) Bricksteeler - $15,022.40
4) Random101 - $11,541.60
