The gates at the Saratoga Race Course opened for its 138th season Wednesday.
It’s Day 1 of 36 days of racing at the track—and it appears the regulars are loving every minute of it.
By 9 a.m. on opening day the horses were finishing their workout and the morning crowd was finishing breakfast.
It’s a familiar scene. People who sit in the “backyard” stake out their prime location beginning early in the morning and then return when the gates open at 11 a.m.
Saratoga on opening day is a tradition for families and individuals—like 92-year-old Pete Dolan.
“Great, great people,” Dolan said. “This is a utopia.”
The changes at the track are subtle this year. A new hospitality team now greets visitors as they come through the gates. They offer assistance for everything from things to do at the track to tips for dining in the city after the races end.
Perhaps the biggest change is not visible to visitors to the track. For the first time ever the Saratoga Gaming and Raceway is offering simulcasting of flat track races. That means on hot days like Wednesday you can wager on the races in the air conditioned comfort of the Racino
