Oregon casino foes take on Cowlitz

Wednesday, March 22, 2006
By KATHIE DURBIN , Columbian staff writer

A well-funded Oregon coalition that opposes a tribal casino in the Columbia River Gorge is expanding its campaign to include the Cowlitz Tribe's proposed casino near La Center.

The Coalition for Oregon's Future bought a half-page color ad in Tuesday editions of The Oregonian headlined "Stop the Columbia River Gorge and Clark County Casinos."

"Right now, Congress is considering legislation to ban off-reservation casinos," the ad says. "But the pro-casino forces are trying to insert a loophole allowing two Las Vegas-size casinos right in Portland's backyard at Cascade Locks in the gorge and 15 minutes north of downtown in Clark County."

Opponents of the Cowlitz casino say the additional exposure can only help their cause.

I don't get to upset when someone opposes a brick and mortar casino, heck people oppose every new Walmart, McDonalds everything. Noone really wants big business in their backyard. Casino's do change local economys as well, not to mention little things like traffic etc.

So each their own, I'm all for new casino's, if they are well thought out, and placed in a decent location. I do get IRATE when they start talking about online bans though, as this has absoluetly nothing to do with the local economy, the neighborhood, or the traffic, in which case I would like to see both our government and nosey neighbors, kindly mind their own business.

Woo hoo I couldnt have said it better myself. All these online opponents are just ignorant. They say they worry about the safety of our money, but come on if people didnt or couldnt cash out you think they would still gamble????? Of course not and besides its our money. And as far as the B&M in oregon cmon I mean the tax revenue alone will help add to the oregon budget as well as the tourism they should get as I know gamblers that chase new casinos. I know a lot of superstitious people who think slots are looser in new casinos (to help bring business) and are willing to make a pit stop wherever they could to maybe hit that elusive jackpot. Anyways being in florida I love seeing the new casinos pop up maybe it will get our southern baptist community to loosen up as they have to realize by now that you still cant make diamonds by keeping your arse squeezed so tight you walk funny....lol Cheers to the folks trying to get the casino and bah to the opponents.
