A district party chief caught in a gambling venue last week in Hai Phong northern city has been released, with police telling Thanh Nien that he was ‘accidentally’ there.
Do Huu Ca, deputy director of the city police, explained Pham Thuyen, the party secretary of Hai An district, was present on the scene but he “just watched” the games go on.
In a raid Wednesday last week, the police caught seven people including Thuyen in a local house with four among them gambling, which is illegal in Vietnam.
The four, all executives of local private companies, were charged with their wrongdoing with roughly VND50 million (US$3,100) confiscated, police said.
Besides Thuyen, the house owner Vu Van Tuyen was released as there was insufficient evidence to charge him with organized gambling.
Mai Van Qui was also freed as he was just “outside the room” when police raided the operation.
In addition, Ca rejected media reports that Thuyen was gambling with the others but his argument conflicted with what Thuyen told Thanh Nien last week.
In an interview on Saturday, Thuyen completely denied his attendance at the place and said, “I heard about the gambling bust at Tuyen’s house but did not pay much attention.”
