Pet Store, Murder, Illegal Gambling, Oh My!

Able Abrego had run a successful pet shop for several months, advertising sales of fish and other pets color painted on his business front walls. The store is located in northwest Harris County, which is northwest of Houston, Texas. Drive by and you may be enticed to stop in and buy some fish as the colored paintings on the building's wall are vivacious and inviting.

But Saturday night Able Abrego's pet shop store front, and life, changed forever when a suspected robber walked in his front door.

Abrego sensed the robber as soon as he walked in and he instantly pulled out a shotgun from behind his counter. He fired at the guy without hesitation, but a lady patron, Gloria Cruz, 40, who had just entered the store stepped in front of the bullet. She was hit square in the head and died on the scene.

So Abrego will now face a grand jury to determine whether he will be charged with murder of the Latino wife and mother.

When the police arrived on the scene, however, this story took an odd twist. The police did not find one pet in the store. No fish, no birds, no dogs, snakes, or other animals that were painted on the exterior walls. Instead, they found over 50 eight-liner slots and the store was set up as a mini-casino.

To add a twist of irony, Mrs. Cruz and her husband were considered VIP's at the make shift casino because they were frequent visitors.

Police seized all of the eight-liners and Abrego is being held on charges for running an illegal gambling business.

Hmm, sounds like there might be a little more to this story than meets the eye. Shotguns are big scary weapons, not many people will just step into the line of fire.

interesting words:

"sensed"

"did not hesitate"

"the lady just entered the store"

"the lady stepped in front of the bullet"

which is it? most people walking into a store would have a hard time immediately walking around someone (to get in front of them) whom another person is aiming a shotgun at.

what happened to the robber?

inquiring minds want to know....

I went digging and found a different version of the story. This one seems to give a little more detail. Still, seems really odd in my opinion...

Woman dies in accidental shooting

The owner of what authorities described as an illegal game room in northwest Harris County accidentally shot and killed a woman while trying to stop a man from entering his place Friday night, officials said.

Gloria Cruz, 31, was shot in the head outside the game room, fronting as Sunny Fish and Pets, in the 2900 block of Gears around 10:30 p.m., said sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Dana Wolfe. Cruz died at the scene.

Able Abrego told investigators he would not let the man into the game room, which contained 8-liner machines, because he looked suspicious, Wolfe said.

Abrego got his shotgun when he saw the man was carrying a handgun, Wolfe said.

While letting other patrons in, Abrego told investigators the man began walking toward the door, Wolfe said. Fearing for his safety, Abrego shot at the man but struck Cruz, who stepped in the path of the bullet.

The man then fled on Gears toward Veterans Memorial on foot, officials said.

He was wearing a white T-shirt and stonewashed jeans. Investigators believe he may have been shot during the incident, officials said.

Wolfe said the case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury. Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
