Pet shelter project sports a new twist
Connecticut Post Online
The possibility of using the former Shoreline Star greyhound kennels on River Street for a new Bridgeport animal shelter — first mentioned publicly this week by Police Chief Bryan T. Norwood — is an interesting idea that's worth exploring.
Norwood let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, during a meeting of the Bridgeport Board of Police Commissioners earlier this week.
While Fabrizi administration officials have been mum on the possibility of bringing the animal shelter to the former greyhound kennels pending a formal announcement next week, the site would be good one if it can be financially advantageous to the city's ailing financial coffers.
The location on Bridgeport's East Side has a number of buildings that obviously would be suitable for the shelter, which officials say will be a $2.5 million facility, now that the greyhound track is defunct.
All that Mayor John M. Fabrizi will say with regards to the River Street site is that the city has plans to combine the shelter with several city services in the area.
Bridgeport officials have struggled to come up with a solid plan on replacing Bridgeport's present decrepit facility.
A very suitable parcel on Barnum Dike in Seaside Park was originally selected, but those plans fell through when the construction bids submitted to the city were way over budget.
Unfortunately for Bridgeport, time is of the essence. The city's present 60-year-old shelter at 525 Asylum St. has been the subject of complaints from city residents for years. During a surprise inspection in August of 2003, Fabrizi indicated that construction of the new facility could begin as soon as January 2004.
Political roadblocks and financial red tape have delayed the new building for two and a half years while the city's abandoned animals have suffered.
Those animals deserve a better facility. It might turn out that the old greyhound kennels on River Street could be the perfect location that will afford those animals the shelter they deserve.
