Pittsburgh Pirates won't delay start of casino construction
The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates said they won't try to delay construction of the city's first casino, which could begin next week, despite concerns about its impact on traffic at PNC Park.

"We're not going to stop them from breaking ground," Pirates spokesman Brian Warecki told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Thursday.

The city Planning Commission is set to vote on the casino's plans Tuesday, and work on the foundation and steel structure could begin if that is approved.

The Pirates and Steelers have both sued over the Majestic Star Casino's master development plan, but the state Supreme Court will not hear that case until at least next month. Both teams are concerned that casino traffic could make it difficult for fans to get to and from their stadiums on game day.

The Pirates want assurances that fans won't miss the start of games if they get within two miles of PNC Park 30 minutes before game time. The Pirates say casino traffic could make that trip take 90 minutes for Friday and Saturday night games if the casino doesn't commit to improve nearby roads, parking and other infrastructure.
