Players dealt in by casino panel

MORE than a dozen organisations and individuals have been invited to join Blackpool's super casino debate.

The Casino Advisory Panel arrives in town next month to discuss in depth the resort's bid for the UK's first and only regional casino licence.

Blackpool will be the last of the eight shortlisted towns and cities to hold an examination in public when the panel convenes at the Imperial Hotel on Friday September 8.

People were asked to compose a 1,500 word submission in order to be considered for participation in the day-long hearing. A limited number of other members of the public will be allowed to sit in as observers.

Those chosen to participate are: the Northwest Regional Development Agency, the North West Regional Assembly, Government Office for the North West, ReBlackpool, Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board, Lancashire Economic Partnership, Blackpool Business Leadership Team and Blackpool Hotel and Guest House Association. Preston City Council, North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, gaming group Leaguenotion, Blackpool councillor and anti-casino campaigner Steven Bate, local businessman John Barnett and retired solicitor Michael Edwards are also on the list of 14.

Interests
Deputy council leader Coun Eddie Collett said: "It's a strong list which would appear to cover most of the community, whether it is business or local people. Those representing their own interests will be able to give their individual viewpoints but I'm confident the vast majority of those people are broadly supportive of our aims."
Coun Bate said he would be giving his own "critique" of the 17 points of clarification Blackpool Council has been asked to supply on the issues of regeneration and impact to tourism.

Meanwhile, Preston City Council says it will be speaking up for its Lancashire neighbours because of the "importance of a regional casino to Blackpool's regeneration and the wider benefits for Lancashire."
