The Layette River Club is one in a chain of three clubs owned by the River Clubs of Indiana, said Matthew Lackey, the group's Indiana public relations manager.

He said this new development follows all Indiana regulations regarding gambling. "It is a totally legal, above-ground operation," Lackey said.

The Lafayette River Club will be hosting several special events in its poker room throughout each month. There will be poker tournaments six nights per week, and free tournaments on Saturdays twice a month.

In addition, due to the proximity of the Purdue campus, the Lafayette River Club will hold a "college night" on the first Wednesday of every month, said Lackey.

There is usually a $25 entrance fee, but on "College Night" this fee is waived. Just show a valid college I.D., Lackey said.

"We don't want kids gambling away money they can't afford to lose," Lackey said.

Jason Jang, a freshman in the School of Management, said there definitely was a market for poker players at Purdue.

Although he said he doesn't play online anymore, he still enjoys the game, and said he might want to attend one of the tournaments.

The grand opening of the poker room is scheduled for Oct. 7. The club manager said there is a $1000 guaranteed prize pot for this event.
