The Ministry of Public Security relieved the head of the Investigation Police Bureau Monday due to suspected links to the crimes of Project management unit 18 (PMU18).
Though no hard proof has been presented against him, Major-General Cao Ngoc Oanh, formerly a noted crime-fighter, is suspected of conspiring to whitewash the embezzling records of notorious PMU18 director Bui Tien Dung

Dung was arrested early this year for allegedly embezzling $2.6 million of state funds and gambling it away on football.

Oanh, formerly a promising candidate for deputy minister of the Ministry of Public Security, has been released from the bureau following a recent order by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung for a prompt conclusion to the PMU18 matter, though he remains deputy head of the General Police Department pending further investigation.
